Allow Time Off for Incubation Creativity arrives on its own accord. Sometimes doing absolutely nothing but think is the biggest magnet for reeling in innovation.   Yet, it is tremendously challenging to be idle judiciously, especially in a work setting where productivity and money are stakeholders.   In fact, doing ‘nothing’ is referred to as ‘incubation’ by psychologists who study the creative process. Understand the Deeper Mechanics at Play Randomness is an occasional factor, but mostly, creativity is about finding associations and striking a balance between them. VisualFunk was recently involved in an Innovation Day for a large educational institution. The delegates were 150 of the years award winners so the day was part reward and part opportunity to get some top talent in a room together.  The day was also the kick off to the roll out of an Institute wide innovation program. Our role was to design a day that would:   Introduce the delegates to a world of thinking differently Get everyone excited about and engaged in the Innovation Program kick off Drive some great new ideas Delegates leave with an innovation kit bag that they can use moving forward   Developing a culture of innovation isn’t an overnight experience. It’s not a sheep dip process. It takes time. It’s a cultural shift. The challenge with an innovation day is the fact that it’s just a day. But if it’s only one day where you can get everyone together, you work with what you have. So the challenge is how do you break bad  habits and get everyone engaged, excited, energised and making breakthroughs in a short amount of time?     I believe that creativity and innovation are verbs or action words and as such, innovative behaviours drive innovative thinking and results.  As such, the day was more than just throwing everyone in the room with some creative thinking tools and saying go for it. VisualFunk put together a day that combined a bunch of different approaches to stimulate the senses, disrupt thinking, open everyone’s eyes to the world around them, embrace freshness and still provide some structure to gain new perspectives when you are stuck at your desk. As such, the day included improv theatre, photography, graphic facilitation  and learning to draw, live instagram and twitter feeds, music, plenty of movement and structured thinking sessions. To make it real, every team had to present their ideas with a peer voting system that put the best ideas live on stage presenting to the shark tank. Change your routine “Routine kills creative thought” – Scarlett Thomas. A routine is something uninteresting, predictable and a sequence where you will always know the end result. This is the opposite of being innovative. Change anything you can in your daily routine, from the breakfast you eat each morning, the way you come into work, what you order for lunch or even the colour of your socks! Being creative starts with small steps, breaking away from your regular pattern will help promote innovation and creativity. 2. Talk to management about your ideas Do you have any ideas that will increase the efficiency of your work or your team’s output? Having ideas or suggestions and leaving them in your head won’t do anyone any good. Arrange a meeting with your boss and discuss any ideas you may have. Demonstrate clearly why you think they will work better than the present system in place. If you are too shy or afraid to setup a meeting with your manager, propose to have a suggestion box where employees can use to put forward ideas with full anonymity.   I spent 2 days at the end of last year capturing a conference in a visual communication capacity. It was a load of fun. When you are in that space, you need to clear your head so that you listen intently. You then sift through all of that and visualise the key points. The beauty of this is that you get to hear some wonderful ideas and messages.  The facilitator at this conference was a softly spoken Argentinian who had everyone on the edge of their seat. Nothing showy, no rah-rah, just brilliant heart-felt messages. It was a pleasure to be listening and absorbing.   VisualFunk Graphic Facilitation – The importance of Team. One of his messages that struck home for me (and inspired the above image) was the importance of team. The word team work/team building/team development is so often mentioned with rolled eyes and a bad memory of some team bonding experience. The facilitators message was simple. The key points were: The human race naturally seeks human interaction and companionship The world has progressed because of people interacting and working together You can achieve more by working together with others It feels great to be part of a team Everyone in the audience today can achieve success by collaborating with others It was just such a simple message but it really made the point. Teams are important. We progress through achieving with others. That’s not to say that you can’t achieve great things in isolation. There is mountains of research around how working alone can achieve outstanding results and this is proved time and time again. At some stage of a fruitful, happy and productive life, teams are present. You will be part of a team. That’s undeniable. Put simply.
